House Rules - Downtime

If you wish to purchase Disciplines/Merits/Ritual Magic a downtime action must be committed to the action of learning these things. Humanity as well can only be purchased after I approve an action that would instigate such growth in the character. Abilities/Attributes/Blood Potency/Willpower can all be purchased as normal.

A number of merits allow the character to hand downtime actions over to them. Only one action can be handed over to a given merit. The ratings signify how complex or dangerous an undertaking they can take on behalf of the character.

  • Allies can take an action on behalf of the character so long as it is in their area of expertise.
  • Contacts can be handed an action, but only for the purpose of information collection.
  • The only exception to the one action rule is retainers as they are purchased numerous times. Each retainer can be given a separate action, but such actions are limited by the retainer’s expertise.
  • Status in an organization can be handed an action so long as the request is one that makes sense within the abilities of the organization.
  • Status can be used within the Kindred community to demand service of a character with lower standing, handing them a downtime action. Like the other merits this can only utilized once per downtime, though abuse of this privilege can result in the offending character losing status within the community.

The following is a list of sample downtime actions to help give you a sense of what you can attempt to do with your characters during this period. Each of the following activities is considered to be one downtime action (though it is possible for some of these actions to fall under the extended action category):

  • Attempts to influence the direction of plot.
  • Training to improve a character’s traits/skills/etc (the first purchase does not count towards this rule, but every subsequent improvement will be a downtime action).
  • Researching/Investigations/Laboratory tests.
  • Maintaining a mortal identity if your character has one.
  • Creating a work of art.
