Myths - Trinity College

The many myths of Trinity College:

In the Walls

Beneath the college connecting St. Hilda’s and the Buttery (a cafeteria) are steam tunnels. There’s even belief that somewhere within these tunnels is a secret passage that connects with Victoria College. Also in the tunnels is an old crumbling, brick and mortar wall. The legend maintains that a man was bricked up behind the wall, though no one knows why, but the spirit sometimes wanders the tunnels. If he catches you within the tunnels he drags you back to the wall, so that another part of it crumbles. When enough have been dragged behind the wall he will be free.

Unanswered Prayers

Sometimes a woman can be found sitting within the sanctuary obviously distressed. She typically finds a stranger and talks with them briefly, aside from being distressed those who interact with have never commented about anything unusual about the woman. Inevitably she exclaims her need to return to the Lady Chapel to pray, an alcove that only has one entrance into it. For those who having been moved by a moment of compassion has turned to check on the woman in the chapel and have found the alcove empty.

Phantom Composer

Other stories maintain that a phantom does reside within the chapel, but not a woman praying, but a spirit playing the organ. Those who have investigated the playing have gone to the chapel where they see shadows crawling about the floor at the front of the chapel, or in other accounts a shape peeking out from behind the front pew. The sound continuing to emit from the organ the individual looks from the pew at the empty organ and back to the pew where the figure has vanished from sight.
