Toronto Timeline
November 6th, 2005

The court is abuzz with hurried discussion regarding the up coming Elysium to be held on the 6th of November. An invitation has been extended to all kindred of the domain to attend Elysium on this night where the fabled Etienne Brule has decided to share the wisdom of his age and impart to the court of Toronto the nature of kindred justice. This has piqued the curiosity of a number of the residents of the city, who intend to attend in hopes of either seeing Brule or possibly even Prince Hollinger, or to find out who would attempt a prank like this. There are many who believe this an attempt to rile up the Invictus, and expect on Sunday night to see if the prankster is successful.

Rumours leading up to this session:

Approximately two weeks ago a strange occurrence made the papers as the police investigated a possible crime. Witnesses in the industrial zone south east of Eglinton and Bayview saw the blaze that quickly escalated into a four alarm fire in a garbage transfer station. Police have released a statement that a reliable eyewitness heard pained screams before the fire engulfed the building leading them to believe that the fire could be the result of either a prank gone awry or foul play.

Three days later in the industrial zone south east of Yonge and Lawrence a similar occurrence occurred where by the few witnesses in the area during the early morning hours heard what they described as the screams of person being consumed by fire. The police have made no comment about whether this event was in anyway tied to the fire three days earlier.

In most things Kindred accept events without worry. Two tales of individuals being burned alive, and what isn’t being released in the papers is the fact that no bodies have been found in both of these cases, the community writes it off as something unusual but nothing to become apprehensive about, until the third attack.

Responding to a fire alarm at the Executive Offices of the Rostie Group, a company that provides office space in the Queen’s Quay to businesses just being formed, the fire department arrived to extinguish what turned out to be a false alarm. They did report finding one section of the carpet that was horribly burned, and likely caused the fire alarm to go off, but it did not spread. This was a week ago, and now the rumors are beginning to circulate through the domain that someone, or something, is targeting kindred. No one from the court is missing, so if this were the case it would have to be kindred outside the court that are being killed, of course this is very difficult to prove if it is the case. Needlessly to say, the Reeve Samuel Morrissey is investigating the matter, and asks that anyone who might have any information on this matter contact him via the Invictus Covenant leader Eliza King.

Chester Borden surfaces every couple of decades and for some has become an institute within the court, making commentary on it’s activities, often at the expense of one member or another. You see no one ever knows that they’ve just spoken with Chester, and often his message is disseminated quickly through the community before the realization dawns that Chester had indeed borrowed another face when expressing his most recent views.

Dear Honored Family,

I know what you're thinking, and put your minds at ease, I am indeed still half-alive! I know so many of you were worried about my potential passing during the recent fires, either because you never got around to exploiting me for something or never got around to killing me so someone else couldn't exploit me for something. But I don't hold it against you, of course. It shows you all care in your own way. I know some of you are saying that you'll be at Elysium on the sixth to see some people make a fool of themselves in the face of Brule not showing up. Others believe he is and want to be part of an important event. My family, let me impart to you the tiniest bit of wisdom to add some salt to Brule’s teaching this Sabbath. Honesty with oneself provides longevity. And you should all be honest with why you're going. A part of all of you truly hopes Etienne is there, and imparts his wisdom.

So you can reject it.

It's normal human nature to want to define your own identity not independently, but in relation to those around you, and its essential in keeping our eternal conditions sane. And one of the easiest ways to do so to by defining what it's NOT. (As Canadians, many of us only define ourselves as "not American", am I right?) And stating that an elder of our kind is wrong (probably not out loud), well, that would give you a centuries heavy feeling of...rightness I guess. Hard to come by, these days.

So Sunday, whether its him or not, don't feel guilty or smug for WANTING to disagree with Etienne, because everyone will be feeling that way. The ones who don't...those are the ones you should be afraid of.

With love,
Chester

P.S. Remember folks, a strong identity is a lot of work! Keep it up, I believe in you!

Rumors after the gathering:

While Etienne Brule never made an appearance, the matter of justice that he wished to teach the kindred of the domain apparently is in action. According to accounts from the evening, Connor Truman, a Carthian and descendent of the Reed line, and David Riley, a Carthian and a descendent of the Swallows line, were blood hunted by the Prince.

So, with such an unprecedented event of two Blood Hunts in the same night, and it being almost two decades since the last Blood Hunt was called, speculation is running rampant as the court tries to make sense of these events.

Etienne Brule, of course, didn’t he say that he was going to teach us justice? Obviously this is his doing, but then again why? What does he have to gain by trying to foment such chaos and pandemonium? Perhaps he intends to seize praxis.

Some have suggested again that the Prince has lost control of his faculties, and that the fabled VII are in some way influencing him. Kindred bent upon the destruction of their brethren, or something completely alien to the kindred condition, could this fabled covenant be responsible?

No, the Prince is in no way involved. It’s actually all just Samuel Morrissey, the Reeve; he’s obviously lost himself completely to his sadism and has moved along to killing. If it’s true that the three fires in the two weeks proceeding the fires were the work of the Reeve as he burned to death kindred from the outside of the court. Perhaps his appetite hasn’t been sated yet, and he’s turned his attention to members of the court - well, the Carthians at least.

Eliza King apparently is setting up a meeting to speak with the Prince regarding the two Blood Hunts, but more interesting is Connor Truman’s demand to be present for the meeting. Such bravado, or as the cynics say stupidity, is being watched with some interest. If he survives should he be commended? More importantly will he really survive the meeting?

And to give some further fuel to the fire, Chester has made sure his voice is being heard:

Dear Honored Family,

Well, it looks like Etienne made good on his word. I can respect a man who gets what he says done without having to bother to make a big show if it. Oh, Brule was there all right, and now we're all feeling the effects. Well, me not so much, aside from the Reeve having better things to do then look in garbage cans for the entrance to my secret underground lair. (Like that one episode of Sesame Street where they went into Oscar's trashcan, am I the only one who remembers that?) But for those of you screaming "oh he's speading chaos and going to take praxis and I'm going to lose my house and car and three very pretty ghouls" I say relax. Justice, as I know it, is not something that forms out of chaos. Anarchists don't live as long as Etienne, as a rule.

Some insight into those who intend to make "good" on the Blood Hunts. If you intend to end the half-life of one of these accused, make sure you do it for some other reason then reward. Even if you have to fabricate some crime in your mind, make sure you beleive they deserve it when their head pops off their shoulders. I'm sure some of you may even know the reasons why, and bully for you. Make sure you believe they're worth killing for. Because once the precedent is set that Hollinger can snap his fingers and gets his court to do the dirty work for him (and it IS dirty work, don't let anyone tell you it's noble) without question, then we're all in big trouble. Then our lives become centred around advancement and each of us only has so much soul to go around. Each piece of you you put towards ambition, you take away from stability. In other words, make sure you know how to tread water before you dive for that big shiny pearl, because you may not have enough air to get back to the surface. Air? Remember air? I didn't think so.

With love,
Chester

P.S. Conner, for the love of God, don't go to that meeting. You'll come out alive but probably wish you didn't.

It has been but one night, and already a response has been issued to the ever Resourceful Chester Borden

To Mister Borden,

Thank you for the open letter. It was very enjoyable! Although I do wish you would have read it to me before sending it to everyone in town...there are a few statements that are not really accurate, and I do wish I could have helped you correct them before letting everyone see it...I hate it when anybody's embarrassed.

First, you know as well as I do that "fabricating" a crime is entirely unnecessary if a good citizen of the domain wishes to obey the directive of our magnificent Prince. The Right Honorable Prince Hollinger is completely within his rights to call a hunt at any time, for any reason, whatever the circumstances. We are bound by duty and law to obey - to expel Mister Truman, if we find him outside the sanctuary of the Ordo, and to destroy him if he will not leave us. Ambition doesn't have anything to do with it. We are citizens and we must abide by the law. The Prince's word is our law. Therein lies our stability.

There are those of us who are beginning to wonder if Mister Brule's demonstration does not illustrate loyalty better than justice. Those citizens who are loyal to their Prince are acting as they should. Those who are loyal to competing ideals are taking the opportunity to make a show of it. There lies your opportunism, there is your ambition. If that ambition and their urge to prove paramount idealism overrides loyalty, there will be widespread defiance, and there stability will be lost. If we are to obey the dictates of the Prince, this whole silly matter will be handled quickly and with a minimum of fuss, and we can get back to business as usual.

There is no sense in promoting rumour and conjecture. All work is "dirty" work. If the citizens are not willing to work to promote a safe and stable domain, we are all in trouble.

With respect,

Lord Florian Durand, Advocate

OOC: Would anyone reading Florian's open letter in response to Chester please send me an email. Thanks.

Still maintaining his innocence, and loyalty to the domain, Connor Truman has decided to ensure that his voice is heard

Dear Chester,

Mr. Durand is right, through and through. Save that he neglects to add that it is the dutiful citizen's duty not only to obey their Prince, but to think and consider what is asked of them when they do so. Failure to think makes them preying vultures or brainless ghouls. True loyalty lies in understanding the one you serve; not leaping every time you believe you think you hear his voice.

Thank you for your advice Chester. I find my situation crushing: for 50 years now I have been faithfully loyal to Prince Hollinger on oath, as was my sire was before me, and her sire before her. I am now blood-hunted, but none of the upstanding members of Elysium can tell me on what charge, nor can they tell me how or when I have been tried, or what law or edict or tradition I have broken to earn this sentence. Nor can anyone seem to confirm that it is Prince Hollinger who has called the blood-hunt: given these circumstances I have no reason to believe it was him. I have been framed; and the vultures have started to circle.

So Chester tell the vultures: my oath of loyalty to the Prince is not a thing to be questioned. I will be at the next Elysium--whether or not it is Morrissey wishes it--and I challenge anyone who doubts my loyalty to the Prince to face me there.

Give my regards to all Chester.

Your friend, and Prince Hollinger's loyal subject,

Connor Truman.
