Rumours leading up to this session:

Two weeks. Two weeks the threat of the Brood looms over the domain. This stress is much more acute for the kindred who have become involved in efforts to drive this intrusion out. For many it has been a long time since they’ve been required to worry about the passage of hours. To live their lives from one day to the next, prepared to spring into action the moment the call comes, instead of months, and even years that was once afforded them while they waited for the culmination of their plans. The upcoming Elysium has been called by the Reeve. Many hope that he will have success to report and that the menace is well in hand. Interestingly enough the meeting is being held at HEAVEN. Inquisitor-General Kaine has called it an Elysium, but because of the building being used, some wonder if that means the club has been officially designated as the second ever Elysium of the domain.

Over the last couple of weeks amidst all the talk of violence sweeping across the domain most of the local news channels and papers have been taking about the growing capacity for charity being realized in Toronto. The Chronos Foundation for example has boldly stepped forward and pledged to have within two months time ensured every member of the homeless community has the option of sleeping in a shelter and a bed for the evening. None will be turned away. While some criticism has been leveled their way, that such goals “are completely unrealistic,” unofficial reports generated by City Hall suggest that the Chronos Foundation may already have managed to house up to two-thirds of the homeless population. If the numbers are accurate than a substantive number have been given brief respite from the dangers they face on the Toronto streets.

News reports for the day of Saturday the 14th 2007 – April – all talk about the major gas leak which was discovered in King’s Circle. One of the oldest buildings on the University of Toronto campus it has been suggested that the age of the building may have been a contributing factor to the decaying of piping the building which resulted in the gas leak. The school administration will not confirm the cause until after the official investigation has been completed. No one was hurt during the incident – the administration pointing to the efforts of the Campus security and the faculty to efficiently clear the building before anyone could be hurt, along with the efforts of Toronto’s Emergency Services.

For those watching a lot of TV – there has been a recent ad campaign run on most of the local television networks advertising a vacation package to Montreal. The Quebec government seems to have taken to what appears a growing Canadian appreciation of Arts and Culture. Signs are even visible in the Federal Government that such interest could be incorporated into their upcoming discussions regarding the 2008 budget. Staffers close to the government are sure that the meetings being held now, and in the months to come, will see Arts and Culture clearly identified as a High Priority item to be added to the upcoming budget. These ads offer a 40% discount on all Montreal fashion, furniture, fragrance, etc. until June 21st (at participating locations only). From the images of the commercial it’s clear that encouragement for tourism to Montreal is being cultivated, and has been specifically targeted towards Ontario/Toronto.

Charity seems to have found itself becoming fashionable with Heaven’s announcement to hold a night of fundraising; all profits being donated to the many families who have suffered under the recent spat of violence which gripped the city over the month of March. Held on Saturday April 14th 2007, Milan Switzer, general manager of the massive nightclub, towards the end of the night proclaims it an unmitigated success with over $100,000 being raised for the Metropolitan Toronto Police Widows and Orphans Fund, and the Sisters of Providence each. The proceeds from the event are being used to ensure that the families impacted by the violence of the previous month will be given a financial reprieve while they grieve for their lost ones.

In the nights leading up to the event – for those who watch a lot of TV – CityTV played a blitz of ads reminding people about the upcoming fundraising being held at the exclusive Heaven nightclub on April 14th 2007. And while donations could be made directly at the club, the studio had also become involved in these efforts, setting up a donation centre in the building and engaging in internal fundraising. Viewers were also reminded that any house of worship was also accepting donations on behalf of the Metropolitan Toronto Police Widows and Orphans Fund, and the Sisters of Providence – all funds having been ear-marked by both of these charitable organizations to help ease the financial burden faced by the families of last month’s violence.

Vampire: a strange rumor has been making the rounds of the court. The word is that the Prater lineage and the Lange lineage might actually be related in some fashion. This of course has raised concerns as to whether that means elements within the Prater lineage may seek retribution for the myriad harms visited upon the Lange family over the last hundred years. Others whisper concerns that madness seems to have become a common trait within the Lange, if Marek’s paranoid assault against Prince Hollinger and Fairfax’s attempt to destabilize the domain in the hopes of toppling Invictus rule. If this is true, and the Prater’s are actually related to the Lange’s, are they also at risk? All this interest likely masks the uncertainty that many in the court feel as the wait for further reports on the efforts against Belial’s Brood.

From the Office of the Prince – Before

Kindred of the Domain of Toronto,

I begin this statement with the regret that I have not been able to make one earlier with regards to the honor that Prince Jameson has bestowed upon me by appointing me Seneschal to her Domain. I have accepted this role and shall do what I can to make myself and my actions worthy of its office and the trust that has been shown in me.

My other purpose is addressing the entirety of the Domain is to make a plea for cooperation. Others have made this plea before I and others will make it again. However, as a loyal and responsible member of the Court of Prince Jameson, I make it again in these troubling times.

The great mortal philosopher Aristotle said that man, by nature, is a political animal. Kindred are no different for was it not from mortal beginnings that our kind arouse? These politics divide us, as they do for the mortals. That being said, even mortals have put aside their differences in the face of universal threats and we must do the same. The looming threat of the Brood is not a piece of charming dinner conversation that passes from memory. It is real and it is here.

I call upon each of you to remember the words of the Reeve and his call to arms. Between his words and mine, I want you all to ask yourselves what you can do to make the Domain a safe and prosperous place. I want each of you to ask yourselves if it is too much to ask to put aside your differences in the coming nights to put an end to the threat of the Brood.

Ask yourselves these things. For this is the Hour. I would see us make it our Hour.

The normal factionalism that we "enjoy" is truly a privilege of a secure society and we are not secure. Help us. Help yourselves. Make this city a safe place for all.

Do not travel alone. If you must make sure you have ways of contacting others. Make sure people know where you are at all times.

If you learn information that affects the city, share it with those who have been empowered to protect the Domain. This means The Prince, The Reeve, The Chronos Foundation or myself.

It saddens me that my first statement must be this. Be necessity compels me. Let it compel all of you as well.

From the Office of the Inquisitor-General – Before

Damned of the Domain,

By order of the Inquisitor-General & Reeve, Roland Kaine, I, the Archbishop Giovanni d'Allesandro, do hereby invite each and every loyal member of the Court of Ingrid Jameson to Holy Mass on behalf of the Lancea Sanctum.

These Masses shall occur every Saturday and Wednesday @ Midnight at the Eliza King memorial chapel on the estate of Lord Florian Durand.

Every member of the court, regardless of covenant, is welcome to attend to hear a sermon on how we, as the descendents of the most dark prophet Longinus, can stand resolute in the face of Belial's Brood and keep our domain strong under the rule of Prince Jameson. The Inquisitor General, and myself, shall of course take time after Mass to hear confession from any and all members of the Court who wish to divest themselves of their sins so that they might be better prepared to stand firm in the face of Satan's minions.

We, the Lancea Sanctum, acknowledge the wisdom of Baron Seneschal de Navarre in his words to the Court and the strength of Prince Ingrid Jameson to lead us to victory through these dark times.

May Longinus bless us and the Lord curse us, everyone,

Giovanni d'Allesandro
Archbishop, Lancea Sanctum

Postmortem on the Eliza King Experiment – Before

Fellow citizens of Toronto, Inquisitor Giovanni D'Alessandro requested that I clarify my statements about the current state of the Carthian Movement here in Toronto-- specifically in reference to an experiment named after the departed Eliza King.

In answer to his request, below is the postmortem on our experiment. Feel free to approach myself or any other Carthian if you wish to get a more personal view on the process we have finished.

Regards,

AK

The Eliza King Experiment: How individual personalities affect the outcome.

Carthians as Social Scientists:

Those unfamiliar with Carthian Methodology will likely be mystified by the concept of declaring the past an "Experiment". To those on the outside, we at times we seem abrasive, self-righteous and didactic, often flaunting what is seen as the "status quo" for no particular reason beyond our own proclivities-- however a deeper review will reveal that the involved Carthians are in fact attempting to adhere to a ethical or political system as per a charter we have agreed upon.

This charter, which explains our methodology with working with general society as well as other Covenants, is strictly adhered to until the experiment reaches its intended end or becomes unplottable.

The goals of our experimentation are threefold; 1) To try modern versions of government, inspired by mortals, on a Covenant level to find the ideal form for the local Movement. 2) To better understand ourselves through putting ourselves through these modern systems. 3) To allow us the freedom to adapt to the changes in our society.

The Eliza King Experiment:

The past twenty years of the Carthian Movement didn't evolve from an explicit charter as cited above, nor was it given its moniker until the twilight of Experiment. Indeed, the Eliza King Experiment evolved through regular and cordial interaction between the Carthians and the other established Covenants. Through trial and error, a policy of openness and co-operation was fostered, where the Carthians were approached with respect and the Carthians in-turn served the city where they could.

We had no official leader, per-se, with Kari Hansen often stridently deflecting such a mantle when it was thrust upon her—but for the most part, the Carthians prospered in this egalitarian system of self-rulership, where Ms Hansen acted as a liaison between our Covenant and others when required.

The naming of the Experiment after it's failing:

The single watershed action that ended the experiment for the Carthian Movement was the death of Eliza King at the hands of Prince Hollinger. Ms King, the then Elder of the ruling Invictus, was deeply respected amongst the Carthians, and her cordiality towards us made interaction with the rest of the city relatively simple. Her even-handedness towards what many members of the first and second estate considered rebellious childer, fostered peace amongst the three covenants—with her often seeking arbitration and communication before arbitrary punishment.

While Ms King’s Death was not the solitary reason for the experiment’s failings, it did herald the end of cordial relations, and the Movement began to experience extreme pressures from outside covenant. The Experiment, lacking both a direction and leadership, floundered. With Ms Hansen's departure, the new de-facto liaison, Connor Truman was ill-equipped to tend to the Experiment as it was.

When Mr. Truman launched a political crusade against perceived injustices, the Experiment was given its last and final blow for our (lack-of) structure was not equipped to weather such duress. As the moral difficulties mounted between Carthians and the establishment, we were perceived to be no longer the partners of peace and rather became the Opposition the Invictus-- and the rest of the city as a result.

What was learned?

The writer can only recount his personal views on what was learned through the death of the Eliza King Experiment, for the lessons tend to be intensely personal to each Carthian. As a result, please do not expect every Carthian to agree on the following points:

1) It is much easier to rule through fear than by love. The effort to co-operate with those outside your covenant is often too much to endure for some more used to fighting for what they have.

2) The minority will always be vilified for political expedience. As we saw with the Circle of the Crone, the smallest of covenants will often be the target of extreme pressures by other covenants simply because they are perceived as weakest. Only larger covenants get the benefit of diplomacy.

3) Always quantify your contributions. The Carthian Movement never requested acknowledgement for its services in the past 20 years to the city, and in the end, such modesty became a stumbling block. When the city needed the sway with general society as the Experiment failed, most did not consider the contribution that the Carthians were making on a regular basis. As a result, Carthians were forced to defend themselves rather than expend their energies for the good of the city. In the future, if the city were forced to acknowledge our stewardship of the Masquerade, they might choose a more political route to approach us.

Closing Statements:

In the end, the Eliza King Experiment lived and died on its reliance on there being gracious and noble personalities on all sides, willing to make compromises for the sake of city-wide solidarity. When those personalities left the field, so did the effectiveness of the said Experiment.

It is my hope that in the future, the Carthian Movement will look upon our history and learn from our steps and missteps. The future model will need to take into account not just our internal relations but our external relations and our role in the city as well. We will need to find a route which allows us to continue to steward the masquerade in a non-political means while in the same place engendering a value to the service we provide for our society.

A response from the Invictus on the Postmortem of the Eliza King Experiment – Before

Mister Koen,

Thank you for the illumination of the thoughts and motives of your Movement's membership.

However, I feel a public response to your conclusions must be made - they cannot go unanswered, because they paint a picture of the operation of the domain that is somewhat false.

"1) It is much easier to rule through fear than by love. The effort to co-operate with those outside your covenant is often too much to endure for some more used to fighting for what they have."

I must admit, this is a puzzling statement. It seems that the Lancea Sanctum, The Ordo Dracul, the Invictus, the Circle of the Crone, and even the Unbound are having little trouble co-operating in the protection and ongoing operation of the domain. The Carthian Movement, and only the Carthian Movement, seems to have experienced difficulty in this matter. Perhaps it would be better to say that the Eliza King Experiment responded more reliably to fear than love?

"2) The minority will always be vilified for political expedience. As we saw with the Circle of the Crone, the smallest of covenants will often be the target of extreme pressures by other covenants simply because they are perceived as weakest. Only larger covenants get the benefit of diplomacy."

One might be tempted to agree, if not for the respect and friendship that most, if not all of the Kindred of this domain show for John Hawke, the sole member of the smallest covenant in the city. That, and the multiple attempts the Invictus made (and, specifically, I made on our behalf) to engage in diplomatic relations with Mister Truman and Mister Riley - only to be rebuffed, insulted, and threatened. Perhaps it would be better said that those who deny themselves the benefit of diplomacy risk vilification?

"3) Always quantify your contributions. In the future, if the city were forced to acknowledge our stewardship of the Masquerade, they might choose a more political route to approach us."

I cannot agree more. Those who expect reward or public acknowledgement should always make an effort to claim responsibility for their actions. Truth be told, it is very difficult to see the contributions of the Carthian Movement in Toronto, and there seemed to be none of you willing to explain yourselves to us without making demands that are often surprising, and sometimes ludicrous.

The dark tone your statement turns to, at the end, is extremely ill-advised. If you intend, during the assault of the Brood, to withhold your assistance as a means to prove your worth, I can guarantee that "a more political route" will not be chosen. Why continue down the road that has failed your covenant? Why not try something new: co-operation and tact?

We of the Invictus appreciate the basic motivations of the Carthian Movement, and many of us see it as a necessary component of a healthy domain. The urge to explore the limits of established rules of society is common among young Kindred, and should be tolerated as long as it does not endanger the good Kindred of a domain. In the opinion of the Invictus, your experiment failed not because you were not given a chance, but because you, the Carthians, chose to define yourselves as outspoken enemies of the rule of the Domain. I believe I am no less tolerant of Carthian declarations than Baroness King was - but I was met with hostility from the start - likely because I did not inspire the same respect in Mister Truman that Baroness King did in Kari Hansen. Your challenges were not philosophical, but concrete attempts to undermine and weaken the structure of rule here - a dangerous practice, considering the forces that have recently been at work in the city - and have recently devolved into threats of violence and outright spite. Mister Truman only recently threatened to "make an example" of Archbishop D'Alessandro for his public statements of faith.

Mister Koen, I implore you to discard the failed trappings of your Movement and re-think the strategy of the covenant completely. Come to us in peace, with the spirit of co-operation for the betterment of the domain, and we will welcome you with open arms. The nights of Connor Truman as a public force in this city are rapidly coming to an end. Let the new nights of the movement begin with reasoned, diplomatic, and honorable intent, and I see a better future for us all.

In Service to the Domain,

Lord Florian Durand,
Meister Advocate of the Invictus

From the Herald of Montreal – Before

Kindred of Toronto:

Montréal has long valued its relations with its esteemed neighbours of Toronto through times of prosperity and times of peril.

We recognize that the threat of the Brood is not Toronto's burden, but the concern of all Kindred in every Domain. Such maleficence must be dealt with swiftly and with the strength of united efforts.

Kindred of Toronto know that you do not stand alone during your time of trouble. Know that Montréal stands by your side through these dark times. In support of this stand against the Brood, Montréal sends aid through me and Sybill to provide whatever assistance we can.

This certain victory over the Brood threat of Toronto shall prove as an example for demons and miscreants throughout Upper and Lower Canada.

A Response to Florian Durand – Before

Lord Durand,

As I previously stated in my final points, the lessons learned are an intensely personal matter, and therefore I could state conclusions that I personally gleaned. Please do not expect all Carthians to share my views in this specific matter.

The first statement of the love versus fear model of ruler ship pertains directly to the relationship between the Carthians and the Invictus. I believe that there has been specific bias between our two covenants, formed by our interaction, that makes actual friendship too difficult to attempt (at least, for now). The biases, formed from slights of the past, taint all of our relations and a change of mode and leadership on the Carthians side will not fix that problem.

Bridges take time to build, Lord Durand, and it will take work and time before Carthians and the rest of the city can approach each other in simplistic friendship.

In retrospect, my second point probably should have read "the weakest covenant will always be vilified for political expedience". Even in light of the fact that the Crone only have a single member present in the city, the Carthians are at this point on the lowest ebb of affluence here in the Court-- and as such it is simple to marginalize us.

I believe you read too much into my statements regarding Carthian contributions towards the safety of the city in the future. As experts in mortal institutions, culture and society here in Toronto, we are still very much dedicated to maintaining the Traditions, and keeping our fellow kindred safe from these new threats.

Rest assured that we will be seeking a more constructive relationship between ourselves and the rest of the city-- but the nature of that relationship very much depends upon negotiations between the ruling body of Toronto and the Carthian representative. We have a few ideas on how to come to a mutually satisfactory arrangement, while still maintaining our neutrality within the model we are preparing to adapt.

We look forward to having the opportunity to present these ideas to the administration within the next few days.

Akiva Koen

PS:

As for Mister Truman's vow to "make an example" of Inquisitor D'Alessandro, I believe he wishes to respond in some way to the statements made against him while he was at his weakest. As a result, Mister Truman has likely taken such words very personally, and wishes to respond in kind. I don't know what Mister Truman has planned for this retribution; however it'll no doubt be within the bounds of our laws-- perhaps even a Duel. If the Inquisitor is worried about such retribution, I encourage that he or an agent of his contact me before matters are irreparable, and I will personally attempt to arbitrate the matter.

***

On the Matter of a Duel – Before

Kindred of the Domain,

Please let it be noted that Mr. Koen's letter to the Court is in no way a declaration of a challenge on behalf of Mr. Truman and that such a declaration will only be made on his behalf by an officer of the Court, most likely myself or The Prince herself and he himself has made it abundantly clear to us that is his intention.

A Duel is very serious matter indeed as it is a reflection of one's integrity and honour.

In that regard, I would encourage Mr. Truman and Inquisitor D'Alessandro to contact me personally if both parties feel there is sufficient animosity and wounding of both covenant and personal honour to necessitate an official duel. Such matters are not taken lightly and require preparations.

On a personal note, I am compelled to remind both parties that this is a delicate time in our Domain and that such disruptions must not interfere with the safety of the Kindred of Toronto. I encourage you both to come to an amicable solution first before all; however the Traditions recognize the need for an avenue for matters of honour to be settled, in other words a Duel.

An open letter from Evan Drake on Ascendancy – Before

Kindred of Toronto,

My name is Evan Drake and I have lived among you for only a short time. If this letter offends any, I do not mean it to. I only speak the truth—as I understand it. I am a sorcerer and have always used my powers in defense of this domain and in service of the traditions. As a mystic I have knowledge of things that many of you do not, and further choose not to believe in. This has little effect on something’s actual existence. You are VAMPIRES. Your lack of belief in the mystic is both foolish and tiresome. It is time you were made to pay attention to the mystical energies you yourselves generate.

Recently much has been made over a ritual cast by Mr. Lawrence that affects the mystical ascendancy of the domain. For those of you who do not understand what “ascendancy” is, it is the convergence of actions and energies that shape the will and purpose of a given area. For a long time kindred have held the ascendancy, specifically the Invictus, as a member of that covenant has held the office of Prince. At that point the Invictus could reap many of the rewards of ascendancy but had little real power to perceive or defend the ascendancy itself due to its mystical nature. As vampires our energy tends to be stagnant, and so the ascendancy also became stagnant. This drew certain things to the domain and in part allowed VII to gain a foothold. VII began using the ascendancy to attract chaotic and destructive entities like the Brood and encouraged the fostering of individuals like Fairfax. In many ways Fairfax was most likely directly shaped by the ascendancy and brought to Marek’s attentions through the unknowing manipulations of VII. For beings such as kindred to hold ascendancy they must strive to be just and ordered to compensate for the natural deterioration that is part of the vampiric state—which Hollinger did not. In possessing Richard Hollinger, VII was positioned perfectly to influence the ascendancy so that long after its banishment its influence would still be felt.

In attempting to affect VII’s influence over the ascendancy, Mr. Lawrence was faced with a difficult choice. I myself can attest to the difficulty of getting those of you who foolishly choose not to believe in the mystic to listen, even when it is blatant the horror that is before us. So Mr. Lawrence determined to act first. Not perhaps the most prudent choice, but one I myself heartily understand. In an ideal situation his ritual should not have changed the ability of the Invictus to reap these mystical rewards. However, attempting to affect ascendancy is like fighting to mix paint, and when you finally gain control it’s very easy to put in to much pigment, as it were, and end up with an unexpected colour. This is what has happened and inadvertently the Ordo Dracul now holds mystical ascendancy rather than the Invictus.

Because of entities like the Brood, mortal sorcerers and other monsters it is not safe to lightly toy with such a powerful thing as ascendancy. It would be too easy for hostile forces to take advantage of the situation. Ascendancy is now in the hands of those who can actually perceive and defend against threats arrayed against them mystically. It now falls to all of the Dragons to protect it, and I can attest to the mystical power this Covenant can wield, if they choose to.

Whether Mr. Lawrence should or should not have cast the ritual is now immaterial. It is done and the Prince has dispensed her justice. For what it’s worth, this ritual was performed in defense of the city. Do not blame the Ordo Dracul as a whole for this action. For the entire time that I have known them they have always acted in service and defense of this domain. You should consider them honoured and valued warriors and scholars and not defame them with accusations about matters barely understood.

For those of you who still choose not to believe—that time is finished. Believe. A force of demons has been raised to raze this city and in your disbelief you may be idle. Idle hands are the devil’s playthings. Stop the in-fighting. Go to the Lancea and confess your sins. Support the Prince; aid her Seneschal, the Reeve and his Archons. Join with the Chronos Foundation in helping to defend this domain.

In Service to the Domain of Toronto and her Prince,

Rumours after Elysium

For the few who decided to venture forth to the Reeve’s gathering at HEAVEN; the night proved eventful. For those who had not yet had the pleasure of entering into the inner sanctum of the expansive nightclub, the décor proved stunning, and a topic of conversation at the beginning of the evening. Beneath their feet the building thrummed with the club music and the mortals gathered for a night of physical gratification. Above the kindred of the court met to hear the Inquisitor-General’s report on the activities against the incursion of Belial’s Brood.

Roland Kaine called upon the members of the vampiric community to bring their resources to bear and cooperate with him and the Archons in every capacity conceivable. Gabriel Winchester was given special notice by the Reeve for his efforts against the Brood, and was said to have actually taken to the field in opposition to their presence. The Inquisitor-General in his usual redneck fashion extolled the “fruity-little-nancy-body” for such efforts – surely a backhanded compliment, but from the gruff Roland Kaine, true praise.

The Carthians as a whole also received commendation for their efforts in aiding Court efforts to maintain the Masquerade while the Brood continues to leave mangled bodies in the wake of their satanic practices. Clearly their calls for attention to the fortification of this ancient Tradition two weeks prior at their abortive Parliament are sincere. A few others were also singled out for their efforts against the malignant kindred who stalk the Toronto streets, but the primary focus of the Reeve’s speech was to again call for the full cooperation of the domain against this threat.

His annoyance with politics which may be at play during this incursion was made evident when he warned his irritation with attempts by kindred to capitalize upon the situation to forward their own agendas. Belial’s Brood is clearly at the top of his list. Coming closely on the heels of his speech was the dramatic disappearance by Evan Drake, who then reappeared moment’s later with a book that was quickly placed into the hands of Karolina Hansen who kept it by her side for the majority of the evening. Bound with leather straps and a strange symbol over its centre, the book proved to be of interest most notably to the mystically inclined of the domain.

The sudden end of the night came with a seemingly spontaneous attack against Florian Durand. Reports are a little muddled due to the alacrity with which the assault occurred. Some speak with sadness as they watched the noble Florian backed into the corner of the room as Mr. Lawrence rushed after him wielding his cane in what seemed a near frenzied state. The leader of the Invictus’ plea of confusion for this attack to Prince Ingrid was met with her own attempt to injure Lord Durand. The onslaught happened seconds later as kindred rushed towards the embattled Daeva – some hesitated, unable to strike him, while others wielded knives, guns, and stakes.

It ended almost as quickly as it started. Karolina Hansen standing in front of her sibling, her hand keeping him in place against the wall as the stake clearly through his heart kept him immobile, warning the gathered kindred that any who wished further harm against her brother would have to go through her. Hurried discussion among the more notable members of the Court saw the night quickly ended at HEAVEN with a pronouncement from the evening’s host – Gabriel Winchester – that the night would continue at the Elysium for those interested in enjoying the rest of their night in the company of the community. Rumors swirl as to what the attack against Florian Durand means for his standing within the Court, and the Court at large.
