The
Woman from the Fold is a reference to a Huron myth which details
the creation of the earth. Before Earth the world was covered in
water. One day a woman fell from the heavens and was found by the
animals and fish that lived in the waters. Seeing that she could
not live in the waters as they did, they dived deep beneath the
waters to fetch earth from the ocean floor. Many died in the pursuit
of this goal, but eventually the earth was gathered for the woman
to walk upon it. Years past and the woman walked alone upon the
earth, until one day she gave birth to twins. The woman of the fold
died in the process, but in her passing caused plants to spring
forth from her resting place.
The twins were instructed by the spirit of their mother to prepare
the earth for humans to live upon it. The brothers found they were
incapable of working together in this endeavor, and instead separated
to prepare their portion of the earth. Tijus-kaha made proper animals
that would be of use to human beings. He created things such as
the dove, the mockingbird, and the partridge. Tawis-karong on the
other hand created monstrous animals, which were fierce and terrifying.
He created things such as the wolves and bears, and snakes of giant
size. Time passed as the brothers populated their lands. Tijus-kaha
was visited by his mother’s spirit to warn him about the evil
his brother intended.
Tawis-karong in his solitude had decided that his creations showed
he had more power of the two, and that meant the earth should be
his alone to rule. The conflict inevitable, the brothers came to
blows. The winner of their duel would become the master of the world.
The fight rage for days until Tijus-kaha managed to strike his brother
down. The blow instead of killing his brother took him to the cusp
of death, allowing Tawis-karong to slip away to the west. It is
now believed that when the living dies they will journey to the
west where Tawis-karong awaits them.
